Buying a Home With Your Partner: What to Talk About First

Buying a home together is one of the biggest steps a couple can take. Before you start touring, have a few honest conversations.

Money

  • What is each person's income, savings and debt?

  • What monthly payment feels comfortable, not just possible?

  • Who will pay for what, and how will you share expenses?

Credit

Lenders look at credit scores and history. Check yours together so there are no surprises.

Ownership

Talk about how the title will be held and what would happen if your situation changes. A real estate attorney can help with this, and I am not a lawyer.

Priorities

  1. Each of you writes a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves.

  2. Compare the lists and find your shared goals.

  3. Decide what you are willing to compromise on.

Lifestyle

Think about commute, space, a yard, work from home and what the next five years might look like.

Stay a team

House hunting can be stressful. Take breaks, celebrate small wins and remember you want the same thing.
