Declutter Before You List: A Simple Room-by-Room Plan

Buyers want to picture themselves in your home. Clutter gets in the way. A few weekends of decluttering can make a big difference.

Start with a three-box method

Label boxes Keep, Donate and Toss. Be honest. If you have not used it in a year, it probably goes.

Room by room

  • Entry: clear shoes, coats and mail so it feels open.

  • Living room: remove extra furniture, and keep surfaces mostly clear.

  • Kitchen: clear counters except for one or two items. Clean out the pantry and the fridge.

  • Bedrooms: simplify closets, since buyers will open them.

  • Bathrooms: put away toiletries and add fresh white towels.

  • Garage and storage: tidy shelves, because buyers want to see space.

Pack early

Boxes you pack now are boxes you will not need to pack later. Store them neatly, or move them offsite if you can.

Then clean

A deep clean makes everything feel newer. Do not forget windows, baseboards and light fixtures.

Personal items

Pack family photos and collections so buyers can imagine their own lives there.
